About Asbestos

Asbestos itself is a naturally-occurring mineral made up of fine flexible fibers. Asbestos fibers are supple enough to be woven yet they are very strong, have low electrical conductivity and are extremely heat and chemical resistant. All of these properties made asbestos a very useful industrial and household material. Asbestos was used in thousands of products and applications all through the twentieth century exposing millions of Americans to this cancer causing substance.

The elements which make asbestos so adaptable for many industrial and household uses are the same elements that make it so dangerous to the human body. The fibers in asbestos can be easily split apart and become airborne. The very small size and shape of these fibers makes them extremely easy to be inhaled into the lungs. Asbestos fibers can persist in the body for a long time, causing large amounts of damage to the lungs and surrounding tissue. The effects of asbestos are very gradual, someone who has been exposed to asbestos may not begin to show symptoms until 20, 30 or even 50 years later. Ultimately, asbestos exposure can lead to asbestos related diseases such as, mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.

Unaware of Exposure to Asbestos

Many people who have been exposed to asbestos are completely unaware. You cannot tell from looking at a particular product that it contains asbestos. Many everyday items such as thermal insulation, fireproofing, sound insulation, gaskets, packing, ceiling tiles, drywall, toys, furnaces, irons and even potholders contained asbestos until at the late 1970’s. Manufacturers were not required to list asbestos as an ingredient in their products. And companies were not obligated to warn workers of the dangers of working with asbestos. The asbestos industry was well aware of the dangers of asbestos and failed to warn the millions of people who were exposed. The Galiher Law Firm feels strongly about holding these companies liable for their failure to warn. We have successfully represented clients suffering with mesothelioma for over 30 years. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma you may have a legal claim against these companies.
